There’s hope – I may have another blog underway, still on WordPress.  I’m working on it.

I apologise for all the drama – it’s been a total implosion on my side.  But that happens – as I’ve said, at least once a week.

I just needed to make a new start – refresh.

A rich lonely widow decided that she needed another man in her life so she placed an ad, which read something like this:

RICH WIDOW LOOKING FOR MAN TO SHARE LIFE AND FORTUNE …NEEDS TO HAVE THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

1) WON’T BEAT ME UP
2) WON’T RUN AWAY
3) HAS TO BE GREAT IN BED

For several months, her phone rang off the hook, her doorbell was ringing constantly, she received tons of mail, etc., all to no avail: none seemed to match her qualifications.

Then one day the doorbell rang yet again. She opened the door to find a man with no arms and no legs lying on the welcome mat.

Perplexed, she asked, “Who are you? And what do you want?”

“Hi,” he said, ” your search is over, for I’m the man of your dreams. I’ve got no arms so I can’t beat you up and no legs so I can’t run away.”

“Well, then,” she said, “what makes you think that you’re so great in bed?”

To which he replied,….. “Well, I rang the doorbell, didn’t I?

Secularity has its limits.

Even the most hard-headed, rational, logical people I know tap into something beyond them.

They call it

1) art

2) humanity

but they feel the need to go beyond themselves, to see a greater end, to see the beauty and wisdom in things.

The rest of us call it spiritual.

I often muse on the Hungry Soul. When all the basics of human life have been satisfied (a home, a family, a job, comforts) there is still a streching out towards something greater – towards the intangibles. I have seen it in too many faces.

A quest for greatness? immortality? It is something more. It is an inner satisfaction – an inner balance.

The mysterious, the wondrous, nature, beauty, life – it is all around us to inspire and spark the being inside. We can go beyond ourselves. At anytime.

This additional layer – the mystique – sits above all the other things we have as a person. It is an extra layer – going deep. It is an addition to our personality, habits, and experiences. It becomes an extra lens to see things.

It also empowers all the other things we do – our community minglings, warm family, proper work. It becomes a lifelong source.

Take a thousand dollars.  In cash.  Bury it in the backyard.  Leave it for a week.  Come back and dig it up.  What’s happened to it?  Most likely, not much.

Has it done you any good? not really.  What about for others? no.

Take another thousand dollars.  In cash.  You have an hour to spend it.  On whatever you want.

Then that thousand dollars has to get spent again.  In the following hour.  And again.  And again.

What happens after 5 hours?  That thousand dollars has been spent 5 times.  It’s gone round through different hands, been exchanged for different goods and services.  It’s fragmented and probably ended up in some faraway places.  But it’s been spent.  It’s been used.

A thousand dollars has been multiplied by 5.

All sorts of people have got a touch on it.

Circulation gives money it’s power and value.

But we can also superimpose these segments – pile them on top of each other to show the cyclic nature of things.

Seeing the seasons come round – again and again – the years on years delivering a similar message. Taking a step back, and seeing life passing through the same stages – in different places in different ways. A similar core to all these things.

There is the cycle, and there is the spiral. The cycle of one thing – a day or a year – and the spiral – where all these circles are connected, joined by the linear motion of time, giving us a cross-section, an unfolding, a direction to all these cycles. It is the life spiral of a city or a civilisation, a long term cross-section, an x-ray of meaning.

Life spins out minute by minute, hour by hour, but it also wraps around itself to generate these cycles – small little pieces building up like bricks, going round and round, forming an edifice of being, a construction of who we are.

Time, indeed, does go round.

Me, I can spot the signs from a week out.  Things that don’t normally upset me, do, and things I normally don’t enjoy, or pass over quickly, suddenly offer new attractions.  Depression is a destablising force, something that whacks your character out of balance.  It can be the impetus for great change, but it’s also about losing who you are, your true identity.
